This course is designed for students who wish to achieve an overall grounding of Interior Design and who are considering it as a career option. The course is taught practically through a design project and is supported by course literature that covers fundamental skills, elements of the interior (materials, furniture, lighting and colour), design history and design practice.

Aims and Objectives of the course

To introduce the fundamental skills of Interior Design: the ability to draw, to plan, how and where to obtain information and inspiration. Emphasis is placed on creativity and developing a critical visual sense as a foundation for technical skills.

Students will gain a further understanding of:

  • How to produce a visual interpretation of a brief.
  • How to design and plan a space.
  • Exploring colour, lighting and furniture in the interior.
  • How to develop a suitable palette of materials and finishes.
  • How to source furniture and materials.
  • Presentation techniques.

Design Process

The design process is taught through a one-room project. Students are given a client profile and asked to design a conceptual space. The project is displayed at the end of the course demonstrating the learning achievements.

Working on a project, the student will consolidate the core skills learnt in our ‘Introduction to Interior Design Course’ and will be introduced to new skills enabling a more exploratory, detailed and tangible approach to the design process. Subjects covered are: 3D drawing skills, scale, sourcing materials, detail design, lighting design, rendering techniques to explore colour and materials in the interior along with basic presentation skills.

Presentation Skills

Emphasis is placed on presentation skills as a method of depicting and communicating design ideas. Subjects covered are: detailed design of specific elements, examining materials and construction methods, lighting design, depiction and communication methods to compile the project work into a cohesive presentation.

Upon successful completion of this course students will be awarded a Certificate to state they have passed our Certificate 1 Interior Design Course.
